  • 3rd February, Buddy Holly J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, and Richie Valens die in a plane crash after playing Holly's final concert in Clear lake, in Iowa on their way to a gig in North Dakota.

  • I was listening to Elvis, on 78's.  My mother and uncle had a large collection of 'vinyl', with greats like Tommy Dorsey, The Kingston Trio,
    Tommy Sands (who can remember him?)elvis.gif (5166 bytes)       
  • Ottawa native Paul Anka has a #1, Lonely Boy'; his next will be a Billboard #1 Pop Hit with '(You're) Having My Baby' in 1974; setting the longest recorded gap between top singles.
  • New York City - Ottawa pop star Paul Anka has a number one hit single with 'Put Your Head on My Shoulder'.
  • Montreal Canadians goalie Jacques Plante the first NHL goalie to wear a mask on a permanent basis; after getting hit by shot from Rangers' Andy Bathgate.  Designed to wear in practice, after this incident, he wore the mask for the rest of his career.  Other goalies. like Hall of Famer' Gump Worsley, refused to wear a mask well into the 1970's.  It is now a rule for all goalies to wear protective masks.

  • February, First Barbie Doll goes on sale.  Who would ever imagine she would get a 'tummy tattoo', but then that would be the fashion in 'that' generation.
  • Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce invent the microchip or Integrated circuit.  This took the transistor (invented in 1945) with it associated components and put them on a single unit.
