     Apollo 17 astronauts walked on the lunar surface.
  • Venera 8 makes soft landing on Venus
  • Cape Canaveral, Florida - Canada's Anik I domestic communications satellite launched by Delta rocket; world's first geostationery comsat (mass 557 kg); designed, built and operated by Telesat Canada to improve telephone and radio service; Anik an Inuit word for brother.   Inuit are the native peoples of Canada.
  • British Columbia - Dave Barrett's New Democratic Party take 38 of 55 seats in the provincial election; upset 20 years of Social Credit rule in BC.   This was probably the closet I have ever got to politics, getting involved with the New democrats as an election party supporter.
  • In February, in Pickering Ontario - Ontario Hydro opens $75 million Pickering nuclear power plant; has been the largest single producer of electricity in the world.
