bullet Terry Fox passed away - Terry, a victim of Cancer, ran across Canada to raise awareness and raise millions to support research in the disease
bullet Ronald Reagan defeats incumbent President Jimmy Carter to become the 40th President of the United States at the age of 69 years 349 days, the oldest president to take office on January 20th.
bullet July 29 The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.   The event was watched by 700 million TV viewers.
bullet Cape Canaveral, Florida - NASA space shuttle Columbia STS-2 blasts off from the Kennedy Space Center, carrying Canada's $100 million robot arm, made by Spar Aerospace in Toronto; the Canadarm will perform flawlessly; Columbia the first spaceship to be relaunched. The arm would make history again in 1984.
bullet The year saw as well as the launch of the space shuttle Columbia and the air-traffic controllers' strike. It was also the year in which the Osborne 1 portable computer was released, not to mention IBM's first PC. With Microsoft's IPO still five years away, Gates wasn't yet the world's richest man -- nor even a billionaire. But his partnership with IBM to supply the operating system for their PC had already set him on that road.
