Cape Canaveral, Florida - NASA space shuttle Columbia STS-2 blasts
off from the Kennedy Space Center, carrying Canada's $100 million robot arm,
made by Spar Aerospace in Toronto; the Canadarm will perform flawlessly; Columbia the
first spaceship to be relaunched. The arm would make history again in 1984. |

The year saw as well as the launch of the space shuttle Columbia and the
air-traffic controllers' strike. It was also the year in which the Osborne 1
portable computer was released, not to mention IBM's first PC. With Microsoft's
IPO still five years away, Gates wasn't yet the world's richest man -- nor even
a billionaire. But his partnership with IBM to supply the operating system for
their PC had already set him on that road. |
