The PC industry was going through significant changes. The Apple's Macintosh had been released the previous year, and was selling well. But amid the success, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak resigned to pursue other interests, and Steve Jobs was ousted by John Sculley. Meanwhile, Intel announced the 16Mhz 80386 -- the company's first 32-bit processor -- and IBM already had plans to base a PC on the new CPU. Even more provoking, these plans included a new operating system -- whose outlines were only hinted at in IBM documents. In time, this operating system would come to be known as OS/2.
